My historical novel, God's Thunderbolt: The Vigilantes of Montana, failed to make the first cut in the 2008 ABNA Contest. It has now won the 2009 Spur Award for Best First Novel from the Western Writers of America. www.westernwriters.org/highlights

Naturally, I published it myself. Through Amazon's BookSurge. Read the reviews on Amazon and in Self-Publishing Review (www.selfpublishingreview.com)

Winners in other novel categories were published by Viking/Penguin and Univ of New Mexico Press. Second place in the First Novel category was published by Little, Brown.

Success is the best revenge! Hang in there, everybody!

What If the Kindle Succeeds?
Deeplink by Hugh D'Andrade

The news recently has been full of reports that Amazon's e-book reader, the Kindle, is doing better than expected. Analyst Mark Mahaney from Citibank says Amazon is on track to sell about 380,000 Kindles this year, and says the Kindle "is becoming the iPod of the book world," with sales expected to hit $1 billion by 2010.

For it's part, Amazon remains coy about releasing the actual numbers, so it might be best to take these predictions with a grain of salt — and sales of the Kindle haven't come close to the numbers for the iPod. But Amazon has reported that, of titles carried in both paper and electronic form, the e-books comprise 10% of sales, a percentage that is likely to grow.

(to read the rest, follow the link:)

Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking in the shadows for months. Greetings from Germany. I'm Robin Meloy Goldsby, American (New York City) author of Piano Girl: A Memoir, and RHYTHM, a novel that reached the semi-finals of the ABNA contest—not the top 100 semi-finals, but the peasant-level semi-finals. Rhythm will be published in October, which pleases me to no end.

The late great actor Jessica Tandy once said, "Creative people never finish a project, they just eventually become bored with it and move on to the next thing." That's pretty much the way I've lived my life.

I've decided to speak up because I've had an article published in the July issue of The Writer magazine. I had been subscribing to the magazine for years, so it was an honor to have them publish one of my pieces. The article (called "A Musical Memoir Finds Its Rhythm") is the featured "Breakthrough" column of this particular issue. It's about the publication of my first book (Piano Girl).

I wish I could offer an on-line link to the piece, but there isn't one available. I assume many of you subscribe to this magazine.

Here's a quote (permission obtained):

"Writing presents the same challenges as learning a musical instrument. There aren’t any shortcuts. You need passion, patience, and long hours of practice—every single day— until you get it right. Savor the tiny victories as they’re happening, and you win the artist’s race one step at a time. Don’t wait for the book-launch party to break out the champagne. Instead, revel in the honest victory of each well-crafted sentence. Celebrate! Remember that the joy of writing reveals itself when you make your story sing. Practice as much as you can, and you’ll find the music in your words. It’s there."

Best wishes to all of my fellow ABNA veterans. Any word on when the purple hearts are being distributed?

Best,

Robin Meloy Goldsby

Composer and pianist Robin Meloy Goldsby is the author of Piano Girl: A Memoir, and the solo piano artist featured on Twilight, Somewhere in Time, and the Grammy-nominatedSongs from the Castle. Her novel Rhythm—the story of a young female funk drummer—will be published in October 2008.

Hello all, This is my first post in ABNAbooks. I am printing my book using CreateSpace, and I thought some of you might be interested in my experience with them. I don't care if I make money, sit on the couch schmoozing with Oprah, or become famous, so the decision to go with C.S. wasn't an issue. I had a story to tell. I wrote it. I'm done. WHEW! Now I can go on with my life. I'm going to give copies to my family and friends only. Having made the CreateSpace journey and now very close to hitting that "ACCEPT PROOF" button, I have some information you might be interested in. Rather than take up space here in ABNAbooks, I am going to post it on my website www.carolbilt.com. Go to the heading "WHAT'S NEW" and click on Only Birds Can Fly. Good luck to all of you and I hope you achieve your goals. Carol

They're are tons of short story magazines. I'm always hearing about new ones at Duotrope.com. or from writer friends at Zoetrope.com. I just had two more stories picked up by Mississippi Crow. A friend told me about that magazine. I hear they are still looking for stories for Issue 7.

I'm releasing a new edition of my book The Milkman and I'm looking for a new cover design. This is cross-posted from my blog

If you are a graphic designer, or you know someone who would be interested, I'd like to see your ideas for a cover of The Milkman. I'll say upfront this is not a paying gig, but you will get your name on the (back) cover as the cover designer, and I will give you five signed copies of the new edition gratis for your trouble. Please email me your concepts in .jpg or .png file formats only (sorry, I cannot accept hard copy media), and put "Milkman cover concept" in the subject line.

Hello Everyone,

I just removed chapters from my All Saints Day novel blog. I left only five chapters, two of them have been revised. I have also set up a poll to vote on a favorite of the five chapters.

In the past, I found putting an entire novel on a blog was completely unmanageable. I did not feel like editing a blog and a manuscript so I just decided to do house cleaning with the blog. It is like getting your hair cut or having a garage sale and selling a bunch of stuff-definately lightening the load.

So please visit, allsaintsnovel.blogspot.com and VOTE.

Thank you.

Thanks for the avatar help, Admin, and congratulations to everyone else!

Marjorie & Julie - I wish there were more magazines publishing short fiction. It seems like a dying art form at times, which is a shame, since some of my favorite pieces of literature are short stories. Congratulations on your successes with them.

Ian & mcoyle - good luck on those queries. Ian - great job on the web comic!

Stephanie - Momapalooza sounds like my kind of thing, and I'm envious that there are such places as 'literary bars' where you live.

Valya - I didn't actually attend the Expo, but my novels were being handed out in the CreateSpace/Booksurge booth and a brief author bio was on display there...or so I'm told by the Amazon powers that be. Every time I hear of someone who attended I ask if they stopped by the booth, to learn what the display was like, but I've yet to find anyone who did. I'm not seeing the big bump in website traffic I'd expected as of yet, but someone who attended reminded me that attendees usually snap up as much free stuff (like my books) as they can while cruising the trade show floor, then spend the next several weeks or even months gradually working their way through the collection.

Hi Julieann,

When I was writing screenplays I wrote several drafts from start to finish. But certainly not 13 to 15 of them. I guess that is an individual choice and it is best to follow one's intuition.

I have found that with myself that it is possible to over edit too. I have ruined poems and short fiction by over editing and losing the initial energy.

The best indication for me to know if I need to revise or edit is to read parts of the novel to an audience, which I have done. When you are reading out loud and feeling respones coming from others, you can hear where changes need to be made. Also posting excerpts online and receiving responses from others helps with this process too.

I channeled, pretty much, my novel "All Saints' Day" and since I feel that the stories did not derive from me, but somewhere else, I try to stay out of the way, although I have proofread and re-written small sections for clarity. On the other hand, my novella, "Go, Lucy, Go" which comes from me directly, except for the character Lucy who has her own mind, I did re-write. The novella started out as a short movie script.

I think each person just needs to follow their intuition. Some people like to write several novels because they have so much inside themselves, and wait until they go through an editing process with a professional editor or writing circle.

Patricia

I was talking to a friend who has been on again off again working on her novel. She wants to get more serious and wrap it up in the next year. I expressed that after writing three of them that it may take many drafts before it feels write. I go through an average of 10-15 drafts. Each time I go through the novel I make it from beginning to end. Whenever I touch a particular chapter and rework it, which usually amounts to adding a scene or taking out something that detracts from the focus, I consider that all part of the new draft process.

She says, "Oh, it will only have four drafts. I love the voice of my character."

I do too but my revision is not about the voice but about making the language stronger and the story tighter. Her comments have left me doubting myself. As it is, I'm revising my third novel after taking a six month break. A part of me wonders why I'm doing this given the difficult market, but I love the story and feel it needs the tender care.

Hi Kay,

Wow, thanks for the leads--I will follow up. I did send a letter to the agent in London that you mentioned. But the publisher you mentioned that accepts e-mail attachments sounds wonderful because I cannot actually afford to copy 300 pages and send them out. Ink for my printer is expensive.

I will try downloading your novel excerpt again.

I wish that I had saved my reviews (the good ones) from the Amazon contest, but I was so depressed with the results of that contest that I failed to do that. Even so, the good reviews did bolster my confidence and I am in the process of cleaning up "All Saints' Day." The story remains, but some of the syntax and grammar has been edited.

Also want to mention that I posted reviews on the site for a small handful of excerpts. I think though that in the future, I am just going to leave ratings since I am hardly a book critic or reviewer. Hopefully there are some experts on this site who can fill in the other details.

peace,

Hi, group! I've been away for some time, but with good reason.

Several weeks ago I learned I'd been selected as a featured author in the CreateSpace/BookSurge booth for this year's BookExpo America, so I really put my nose to the grindstone to get my new book, The IndieAuthor Guide, into print before the show. I made it, just under the wire. The new book won't be in the booth with my other two books, but at least anyone who visits my website as a result of visiting the booth will see the new book promoted there.

Here's a link to the book on CreateSpace (it won't be available on Amazon for up to 15 days from publication date):
http://www.createspace.com/3340832

And here's a CreateSpace discount code good for 20% off the book during the month of June:
25HKCF3B

In other good, but busy-making news, I've been approached by Teleread to become a regular columnist. I know I've got to take them up on this wonderful opportunity, but I also know it'll be demanding. Speaking of demanding, now I've got to get back to promoting that new book...BTW, can anyone tell me how to get my picture added to my profile? I can't seem to figure out how to do it.

Wondering if anyone is itching to write...maybe a quick column for the ABNA Books site?

I've been so swamped with Conclave that I fear I haven't solicited enough columns for the Summer Online Newsletter (I'd like 1 or 2 more). What I have is great, but I wouldn't mind adding a few more if someone felt like contributing and could get it to me by...oh, say...Friday, the 30th?

A column? An article? An interview?

I know some of you must like last-minute deadlines?

Take a look at the guidelines here:
http://www.abnabooks.com/page7/page28/page28.html

But we're open to almost anything writing-related (500-1000 words), and I'll publish this on Kindle as well, so that you can add it to your Amazon bibliography!

If you have questions, drop me a line: info @ abnabooks.com

I read that Harry Dolan's book is getting published. Amy Einhorn has something to do with it. I never got the chance to read his excerpt, but I am so happy for him. Now we need to get Dwight's in book form: maybe it already has been snapped up, and I'm just behind. I'm sure it is inevitable!

Hi Patricia, Thanks! I've been trying to think of ways to drum up more reviews on this site. I'm all ears if people have suggestions. It was suggested that perhaps we create a Reviewer's Corner, with profiles and designated reviewers.

Hello Authors,

I took a cue from Kay Christine who left a lovely review for my novel excerpt and I have been inspired to review other excerpts on this site. I won't be able to review all of them, and I will review the ones that spark my interest.

I encourage other authors on the site to review other's work. I have noticed that many of the excerpts do not have comments or votes yet, but definately deserve some attention. So maybe if we spark that attention, people besides our nearest and dearest friends and colleagues will vote on the excerpts.

I am happy to be included among so many talented writers.

Me again... As a P.S. to Julie Ann... I wanted to add a "rating" to the comments I left for you, but it wasn't available, just so you don't think I didn't rate it!! (I did, very highly).

P.S. to Valya, too, in case my email to you got lost in your heavy workload, I'm hoping you can spare a minute to see if my excerpt ("Savage Gardens of the Gods") was uploaded okay - as Patricia wanted to take a look, but when she downloaded it, there were just a load of little dots... groan. (I tested it from my end, into my old Acrobat Reader, and it seemed fine). Thanks!

Hope you're all well. Love, Kay

Hi Patricia, thank you for your thank-you! Yes, got it... I got my Pdf problem sorted by a geek on Microsoft's support site - you just open the Reader, click on Preferences and clear a checkbox that says "Web Browser Integration", and hey presto, it works again. I think these things get corrupted sometimes. Your downloading shouldn't be slow (even with a slow/dial-up connection) - maybe if you clear that box as I did, it'll go faster!

I've done one other review so far, for Julie Ann, and hope you like it as much as I liked your work! I'm thinking that many of you who made the Semis would have posted your original reviews, but if not, I'll get to re-reviewing... I've dropped some heavy hints over on the Authonomy website forum - secretly hoping HarperCollins is watching... Actually they are reading that forum, so stand by your beds! Also asked others at Amazon on a "Western Historical Fiction" thread (which is very interesting) to check us out. (Tapping fingers...)

Patricia, Sunni, yes, I think you should take a look at UK publishers and agents. Also, if you're not worried about getting an advance... there's New Writing by Pan Macmillan. It's starting to do very well. Basically, you can send your whole novel by attachment to email - up to 150,000 words; and if they like it, they'll publish it at their expense, and you get royalties. (I believe they do their own cover art for you as well - I'm still figuring that out). Plus the books are sold alongside their established authors' works. Mine was a bit too long originally, (175,000), but they've stretched the limit now. They told me at the time, to for heaven's sake cut it down and send it in! Well, I'm thinking about it, but I want to give the other avenues a good go first - and actually, as I think I've said ad infinitum, the mainstream part of Pan Mac did look at it recently, and very nearly took it. Don't know if their New Writing arm would have done so! Their email is - newwriting@macmillan.co.uk - or check out the NW section on the main website - either www.panmacmillan.co.uk or .com - they seem to have a few handles. I'd also do that query letter to Curtis Brown - well worth it. Also, one of their agents in San Francisco has a good website, and welcomes queries - Nathan Bransford, and it's http://nathanbransford.blogspot.com.

Go girls and boys! Love for now, from Kay

Kay,

Thank you for taking the time to read my excerpts and blog. I have not thought of the UK publishers for fiction, but that is a good idea. I would try Canadian publishers too except that you have to be a resident in Canada to get published by those publishers because of the culture grant system. But maybe Australia.

There have been plenty of readers from the UK visiting my All Saints novel blog and I think I saw that The Guardian had stopped by the blog briefly too at one point. So it is worth a shot. I have had always had more luck in foriegn lands then in the country of my birth.

I will check out the agents and publishers that you mentioned. And check out the review you left for my excerpt. I have changed the synops for "Go, Lucy Go" and hopefully the change will be posted soon. The first synops was a condensed version of the synops for the feature film script for the same story. I did not have much luck trying to sell my feature scripts with the movie business being what it is in the U.S. so I started converting scripts into novellas.

I am going to check out other novel excerpts on this site and leave reviews over the summer. Summer reading--hey, it will be fun.
